An open apology to you

I’m writing today to apologize to you. This apology is directed to anyone who has used or currently uses a website or software product I’ve designed. I’m sorry I call you a user.

Although you do use what I create, you’re really a person made up of flesh, blood, brain, and bone. You’re not this purely task-minded robot who is sitting there waiting for a system response but a human who might be thinking about that mountain of laundry you have to tackle when you get home.

From now on I’ll refer to you as a person. If I’m speaking about many of you I’ll try not to call you users but people. Even though you may have goals and motivations that are similar to others, the reality is you are unique and deserve the respect of a better term than user.

I’m sorry.
