Where the sidewalk ends
Last night I took a walk. I left our neighborhood and walked to where the sidewalk ends. One mile out and one mile back. As I listened to the crickets and frogs singing, it reminded me about how much unnatural noise I have in my life. Occasionally, a car would drive by and this chorus of creatures would abruptly stop and wait for the contraption to pass before resuming their song. The crescendo of nature seemed to happen in unison and was really quite beautiful.
I felt very child-like walking through the night. I enjoying watching my shadow grow and grow as I distanced myself from the sparse streetlights and imagined what it would be like if I were really that tall. When I approached the end of a row of hedges, I wondered if a less than savory creature would cross my path and interrupt my brisk pace.
As I turned back into my neighborhood, the sounds of the night quickly drifted away and were replaced with the sounds of televisions and garage door openers.
Until tomorrow night when the giant walks again.
